“Embers” album, streaming everywhere.

"Embers" plays with the idea that each story is an ember, and invites the listener to think about their own stories as holding the potential, individually and collectively, to set fire to old ideas and ways of being.

Biography.

Hi there, I’m Britt Kusserow, a queer singer-songwriter currently based in Los Angeles, by way of Vermont, New Zealand, Indiana, and Minnesota. My lyrics frequently explore existential and spiritual themes, and my general style has been compared to artists like The Indigo Girls, The Weepies, and Soccer Mommy. In 2024 my most streamed, searched for, and Shazamed songs were “Jericho,” “Your Year,” and "More Than Enough.”

With regard to genre, I would place myself in the “folk, singer-songwriter” category, but in a more vulnerable moment I might refer to it as “moody lesbian balladry.” My Gemini wife has referred to my music as “butch folk” and I suppose that’s a good compromise between the two.

I was drawn to music at a young age, writing songs about Jesus and horses in Indiana in the early aughts. As I continued to write, I found that musical expression helped me navigate the coming out process in an un-affirming environment, and in fact helped me realize that I was queer in the first place.

In my latest album, “Embers,” I explore existential themes related to socialized individuality and a loss of community engagement and collective understanding. Songs from this album (like “Highway 45” and “Siren”) also navigate the grief of how relationships change, and sometimes end, as we grow and evolve.

HOWEVER! If you are going to listen to only one of my songs, please let it be “After or Before” from my previous album, “Flatlander” (streaming everywhere). It’s one of those songs that feels as if it came from somewhere else, it’s the one that I think most clearly articulates the loneliness of our human search for meaning, and it’s sapphic as heck (so much yearning).
